Sheriff Steve C. Sikes was sworn in as Sheriff of Liberty County, Georgia in December 2010 following a special election. Sheriff Sikes’ personal background includes owning and operating local businesses for over 30 years while simultaneously serving the Liberty County and Coastal Georgia communities through his church and other organizations.
While Sheriff Sikes assumed office as a quintessential Citizen-Sheriff, he is no stranger to Liberty County or Liberty County law enforcement. In fact, Sheriff Sikes’ local roots span several generations. Both his father, R.V. (Bobby) Sikes, and his grandfather, the late Paul E. Sikes, served as Sheriff. Paul Sikes was first elected in 1936 and served until his death in 1959. R.V. (Bobby) Sikes ran for the unexpired portion of his late father’s term and served continuously until 1969 when he chose to relinquish the office for one term. When first elected at age 31, Bobby Sikes was among the youngest in the State of Georgia to be elected to the office. Bobby Sikes resumed his service following the election of 1972, and thereafter served continuously until 1992.
Sheriff Steve Sikes is proud to continue this history and tradition of public service. Married for over 40 years to Dean (Brown) Sikes, also a Liberty County native, Sheriff Sikes has three children and nine grandchildren who all reside in Georgia. Sheriff Sikes is a veteran of the Georgia Army National Guard and a previous member of the board of directors at his church. Beyond his extensive business and management experience, Sheriff Sikes’ demonstrated commitment to public service and to the protection of the citizens of Liberty County is evidenced by his hands-on leadership style, his accessibility, and his unwavering pursuit of the highest levels of public safety. In short order, Sheriff Sikes’ leadership traits have purpose
and vigor. With community-based policing tactics and citizen support, it is Sheriff Sikes sincerest belief that Liberty County can be among the safest communities in all of Georgia.
